Russian Military Satellite Cosmos 2612 Executes Unapproved Sub-Kilometer Rendezvous with Commercial SAR Satellite ICEYE-X36

First Documented Non-Consensual LEO Rendezvous Underscores the Urgent Need for Sovereign Orbital Asset Protection & SatRAS™ Recovery Capabilities

Incident Overview & Orbital Tracking Findings

Independent orbital tracking analysts report that Russia’s Cosmos 2612 military satellite executed a deliberate, controlled formation-flying rendezvous with ICEYE-X36—a U.S.-registered commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite operated by Finnish-founded ICEYE—passing within a few hundred meters (roughly 1,000 feet) at approximately 01:35 UTC on October 18, 2026.

Astrophysicist and orbital analyst Jonathan McDowell noted that Cosmos 2612 had begun stationkeeping within 5 km or less of ICEYE-X36 on October 17, describing the maneuver as the first known rendezvous between two active satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) conducted without one operator’s consent. Dutch satellite tracker Marco Langbroek confirmed the spacecraft were circling Earth in matched orbits with near-zero relative velocity, making repeated sub-kilometer passes every ~95 minutes.

  • Two-Week Co-Orbital Maneuver Sequence: Analyses by Integrity ISR and CSIS indicate Cosmos 2612 (launched from Plesetsk in April 2026 as part of the Cosmos 2609–2614 cluster) initiated an orbit-raising burn of ~46.5 km on September 30, 2026 to drift into plane alignment before dropping back to ~555 km altitude on October 12 (Δv ≈ 57 m/s).
  • Vulnerability of Unmaneuverable Commercial Assets: The ~90 kg ICEYE-X36 spacecraft had not performed a detectable maneuver since late June 2026, leaving its capacity to evade close-proximity inspection or potential counterspace interference uncertain.
  • Escalating Counterspace Posture: Because commercial SAR constellations provide all-weather, day-and-night reconnaissance critical to defense operations, commercial LEO spacecraft increasingly face co-orbital inspection, electronic interference, and physical proximity threats.
SINGULARORBIT MISSION BRIEF // WHY SATRAS™ & OCV MATTER

Securing High-Value Commercial & Defense Payloads in Contested Orbits

The Cosmos 2612 / ICEYE-X36 encounter demonstrates that Low Earth Orbit is no longer a benign operating environment. When high-value commercial or defense satellites experience propulsion depletion, anomaly, or hostile co-orbital shadowing, operators currently have no physical recourse other than leaving sensitive hardware exposed in orbit or allowing destructive atmospheric demise.

SingularOrbit’s SatRAS™ and Orbital Capture Vehicle (OCV) provide allied government and commercial operators with rapid, responsive orbital intervention: enabling non-destructive rendezvous, physical asset retrieval, forensic anomaly inspection, or secure relocation and intact Earth return of sensitive spacecraft before intellectual property or national security hardware is compromised.

SingularOrbit Announces Board of Directors to Guide Next Phase of Growth

Team Brings Diverse Perspectives to SINGULARORBIT’s Aerospace Strategy

Executive Summary & Strategic Mandate

SINGULARORBIT has formally established its five-member Board of Directors, uniting five leaders with distinctly different backgrounds across aerospace systems engineering, defense and directed-energy R&D, medicine and venture capital, federal contracting, astrophysics, and global science communication.

Designed to challenge conventional single-lens industry thinking, the Board provides governance, perspective, and commercialization guidance as SingularOrbit scales its specialized operating divisions across commercial and government space markets:

  • Satellite Recovery (SatRAS™): Non-destructive orbital capture, servicing, and intact payload return.
  • Space Statement of Work (SOW) Services: Integrated mission engineering and lifecycle technical execution.
  • Deep Space Logistics Services (DSLS): Cislunar and deep-space orbital transport and logistics architecture.
  • Regulatory & Commercialization Expertise: Navigating complex multi-agency licensing, federal defense acquisition, and commercial space operations.
CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT // “THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE OF GOVERNING BOARDS”
“The idea was to create the Swiss Army knife of governing boards. We didn’t want a room full of people who had spent their careers looking at the space industry through the same lens. We deliberately sought out leaders who would challenge us from different perspectives, ask different questions and bring experience that extends well beyond the technical side of the business. It’s the kind of board I believe will make SINGULARORBIT stronger.”
Duane “Hammer” Redding
